Rimowa and Vitra have embarked on a collaborative design journey — and it turns out they are natural travel companions. By partnering on a new capsule collection, dubbed Rimowa Vitra 2025, the German luggage manufacturer and Swiss furniture brand are highlighting the shared spirit that lies beneath each company’s hard shell.

Sure enough, the two brands have long displayed an appreciation for clean lines and sleek aluminum. In Vitra’s case, the material has been a consistent touchstone of its catalogue, turning up in legacy offerings like the Eames Aluminum Group series as well as newer introductions like the Belleville tables by the Bouroullecs. Rimowa, meanwhile, is best known for its grooved aluminum suitcases, which are synonymous with precise German engineering.

But the brands’ similarities extend beyond the surface, too. Yes, Rimowa products may get most of their use in airports, while Vitra products are more likely to turn up in modern workspaces. Yet these two environments actually have a fair bit in common. After all, today’s office workers tend to move around throughout the workday — seated at corporate HQ one minute, then taking a call from their living room couch the next. Similarly, Rimowa’s series of commute-ready attaché cases and crossbody bags prove that the company is as focused on day-to-day life on the go as it is on long-distance travel.

The Rimowa Vitra 2025 collection, in turn, celebrates the two companies’ “common passion for mobility and multi-functionality.” Their first collaboration, the Aluminum Stool, appeals directly to anyone who finds their Rimowa suitcase handsome enough to keep on display as home decor in between trips. Modeled after the luggage maker’s trunks, the stool features the same ball-bearing mounted wheels and cushioned axles as a Rimowa bag. It’s generous when it comes to storage, too: The interior compartment (lined with Vitra’s Laser RE woven fabric) features mobile dividers for organizing magazines, records or documents. A detachable cushion (again upholstered in Laser RE, and offered in three colours, Ice Blue, Papyrus and Emerald) snaps off for easy cleaning.

The collection’s second piece is a riff on Arik Levy’s 2010 Toolbox (originally produced in recycled plastic) that reimagines the classic design in anodized aluminum, again with a soft Laser RE lining. (Rimowa manufactures the aluminum elements at its factory in Cologne, while Vitra produces the textile components on its campus in Weil am Rhein.) The portability of the caddy makes it easy to keep key tools on hand no matter where you’re setting up shop for the day.

The Aluminum Stool is limited to 1,000 pieces, while the Aluminum Toolbox is even more exclusive, released in an edition of just 100. Both launch on June 18 on vitra.com (and rimowa.com in Europe), while the stool will also be available the following day at select Rimowa flagships.

Speaking of retail, Rimowa recently unveiled a new boutique at Toronto’s Yorkdale mall. As with other locations, the shop’s design carries the company’s signature grooved texture to an architectural scale. To mark the opening, Rimowa has added a Toronto-exclusive design to its collection of stickers, which are a popular way of personalizing its suitcases — and now its furniture, too.
