Opening June 6 at Freidman Benda in New York, Formation marks Italian studio Formafantasma‘s first contemporary furniture gallery exhibition in the United States. Known for their conceptual approach to material and design history, the studio presents a new body of work exploring the archetype in furniture and the evolving role of objects within the home. Made entirely of Cherry wood, each piece begins with the plank —cabinetmaking’s most elemental unit — and expands into furniture and lighting forms that feel at once contemporary and familiar. LED lighting components reference digital screens, while textile details evoke domestic craft traditions often overlooked in design history.
Influenced by the Shakers, Frank Lloyd Wright, and George Nakashima, the collection balances warmth and restraint, pairing natural timber with brushed aluminum to reflect both historical reverence and technological awareness. The result is a meditative domestic landscape that values memory, care, and design interventions. With Formation, Formafantasma invites viewers to reconsider how furniture reflects cultural shifts and intimate experiences, shaping spaces.
