Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is hiring a Senior Designer – City Design with 6+ years of experience in architecture, planning, urban design or landscape architecture. You’ll be based out of their office in Los Angeles, California. This is an opportunity for you to create and innovate with a strong conceptual design ability applied to projects at divergent scales and in varying geographic and social contexts. SOM is looking for a Senior Designer who exhibits initiative, process innovation, problem solving and decision-making quality with a high attention to precision and accuracy at a project level.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in design and technical discussions, contributing to informed decision-making across all project phases.
  • Communicates consistently through weekly meetings, supports accurate record keeping, and ensures clear sharing of project updates and correspondence.
  • Supports senior leadership in developing and maintaining project schedules, work plans, presentations, and deliverables to meet key milestones.
  • Helps oversee project financial performance and resourcing, contributing to efficiency and alignment with client expectations.
  • Fosters a collaborative and productive relationship with clients to support the team’s ability to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Provides mentorship and supervision to staff, defining clear expectations, offering guidance, and delegating responsibilities based on team strengths.
  • Participates in talent development by reviewing resumes, conducting interviews, and supporting strategies for recruiting future leaders and specialists.
  • Promotes sustainable practices, contributes to internal standards and procedures, and helps mitigate financial and legal risks to the firm.

Qualifications

  • Professional Degree in Architecture, Planning, Urban design, or Landscape Architecture.
  • Professional licensure process is close to completion; LEED accreditation strongly preferred. 
  • 6+ of experience or equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Experience in large-scale planning, mixed-use and transit oriented development, and consistently demonstrated facility working in a fast-paced and intensely collaborative professional environment.
  • Effectively communicates internally with project teams and externally with consultants and clients through timely and appropriate written, oral, and visual means.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper, Enscape, Lumion, parametric and rendering software, and other graphic software as well as Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite and Microsoft Office (Revit is a plus).
