On Friday, June 17, the AZ Awards gala will once again bring together top architects, designers and industry professionals from across Canada and the globe for one night in Toronto, for the announcement of the 2016 AZ Awards winners. A chance to meet and mingle with the international finalists and winners, the gala is the design event of the summer.

There, we will announce the winners of the 2016 AZ Awards. For the sixth installment of the annual competition, our five jurors – architect Chris Wilkinson of WilkinsonEyre, interior designer Anna Simone of Cecconi Simone, landscape architect Thomas L. Woltz of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, architect John Tong of +tongtong and designer Omer Arbel of Bocci – waded through a staggering number of entries to narrow the field down to 66 finalists.

The finalists are from New York, Toronto, Montreal, but also from Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, São Paulo, Shanghai, Sydney and Mumbai, to name just a few. The public was also invited to vote for the People’s Choice throughout the month of April, and selected its favourites in each of the 18 categories.

Jury member Omer Arbel also designed the AZ Awards 2016 trophy. The renowned Vancouver designer is best known for his lighting company, Bocci. For the AZ Awards, he has created a statuette that continues his multidisciplinary exploration of scale and materials.

The Evergreen Brick Works will be transformed for the event with an installation by award-winning firm Castor Design. Helmed by Brian Richer and Kei Ng, the Toronto studio is known for its industrial bent, designing lighting and other products from salvaged materials, and its versatile interiors. The guest of honour will by Gaetano Pesce, the New York-based designer behind some of the world’s most iconic pieces. Award-winning journalist Ian Brown will serve as master of ceremonies at the event, which will boast Italian nosh and Stratus Winery’s best, as well as desserts by Sud Forno.

The AZ Awards gala is an excellent opportunity to meet and network with the finalists and winners and with many more top industry professionals from around the world, and to see the very best in international architecture, landscape, product design and interiors.

The AZ Awards gala takes place Friday, June 17, at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto.

It is a celebration in three acts: 6pm-8pm: Cocktail reception; 8pm-9pm: Awards presentation announcing the 2016 winners; Post-ceremony: festivities continue!
