With the release of its Gio collection, Layered pays homage to Italian architecture from the 1960s and ‘70s. Named after the iconic architect and designer Gio Ponti, the three rugs in the collection explore geometry, rhythm and colour in “deliberate contrast.”
Along with Ponti’s mastery of merging form, colour and precision, the Gio collection from Layered was informed by architectural elements like floor friezes and the influential design language of the ‘60s and ‘70s. The three patterns in the series each play with aspects of geometry and focus on proportion and symmetry; the series is categorized under the brand’s wool rugs collection.
Interpreting Ponti’s approach to pattern and colour in architecture, one that expresses balance over decoration, the creative team at Layered developed three distinct rugs for the Gio collection: Mezza Confetto, Doppia Rosa and Coppa Canella.
Each rug has its own geometric rhythm and identity and lends a dynamic grounding feature to interiors. With Coppa Canella, a vertical flow is created through three half circles in muted earthy tones.
Doppio Rosa frames two defined colour fields within a linear structure; the result is a balanced arrangement of contrasting tones — rich blue and vibrant pink — and rectangular shapes.
The Mezza Confetto, meanwhile, features a composition of two full circles divided in half by a trio of vertical lines. The two circles are split by contrasting shades that alternate on either side of the central lines.
All three rugs in the Gio collection from Layered are made from 100 per cent wool and hand-tufted by skilled artisans in Bhodhi, India. To ensure the contrast and distinction, each colour field is hand-cut, which creates subtle height variations and an invitingly tactile surface to enhance the pattern.
All three rugs in the Gio collection from Layered are available in four standard sizes ranging from 180-by-270-centimetres to 300-by-400-centimetres.
