Meeting at the intersection of material experimentation and poetic design, the Hatch floor lamp by Studio Yellowdot is the most-recent addition to the Istanbul- and Hong Kong-based studio’s award-winning Hatch collection.

Helmed by life-partners Bodin Hon and Dilara Kan Hon, Studio Yellowdot is known for its captivating visual language, imaginative designs and unique merging of traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.

Appearing as a luminous sculptural object, the Hatch floor lamp by Studio Yellowdot is crafted from an unexpected material – discarded eggshells. Each disc-shaped diffuser is made from the shell fragments of approximately two dozen eggs using a technique inspired by traditional eggshell lacquerwork. After being carefully cleaned, the individual pieces are hand-assembled into a structured three-dimensional form in transparent resin, which preserves the shells and showcases their natural textures.

Surrounding a silver-topped LED filament bulb, the diffusers produce a soft, diffused glow that accentuates the organic patterns and intricate detailing of the composition. The diffusers are affixed to a polished stainless-steel column, which contributes to a structural contrast and interplay between fragility and strength.

The Hatch floor lamp by Studio Yellowdot is offered in two heights – 1.6 or 1.9 metres – and can feature single or double handcrafted diffusers. A hand-carved capacitive touch sensor that resembles a bird perch activates the floor lamp and is a poetic and interactive gesture meant to reinforce themes of shelter, warmth and renewal.

Unveiled as part of the RoCollectible curation at Galleria Rossana Orlandi duing Milan Design Week, the Hatch floor lamp is a curious harmonizing of craftsmanship, material innovation and contemporary lighting design.
