Now in its 11th year, the 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen will once again play host to design enthusiasts from around the world, with showrooms, galleries, shops and other venues across the city opening their doors in celebration of the very best in design. From furniture and lighting to accessories and material innovations, the creativity on display will satiate and inspire the design community. Below, we preview five product launches that we’re looking forward to seeing this year.
Appearing for the first time this year, U.K.’s Bill Amberg Studio will debut cutting-edge designs at its TRANSCENDENCE exhibition – designed by architect and curator Frederikke Aagaard and situated in an industrial hall that once produced ship engines. Built using natural and recycled materials (all of which will be reused afterwards), the transformed raw factory space will invite visitors to experience the leatherworks studio’s perceptions and approach through demonstrations, installations and the revealing of new pieces.
One such item will be the Folded Stool, a sculptural seat crafted from a single piece of leather. Hand-folded by the studio’s skilled craftsmen, the Folded Stool exemplifies Bill Amberg’s “pioneering approach to structural leatherwork,” which merges traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. Made from traditional English pit-tanned leather with full vegetable tannage, the Folded Stool incorporates minimal, near-invisible metalwork that secures the structure while giving it the appearance of a freestanding and shapely stool. The Folded Stool is available in three sophisticated hues – natural, chestnut and tan – each of which will patina naturally over time.
While Mexico-based designer Fabien Cappello’s Toto lamp has the silhouette of an archetypal table lamp, its exaggerated proportions and unexpected tactility lend it an almost “cartoonish presence” – one that subverts convention in a seriously playful way. Akin to a children’s drawing of a lamp, Toto features a chunky cylindrical base topped with a conical shade – but with both portions wrapped completely in textiles in a wonderful extension of the classic lampshade, it delightfully moves from simple to sublime.
Toto is available in three sizes, with each presenting its own personality that ranges from “visually gigantic but physically light” to compact, tidy and utterly charming. Adding to its playful nature is the range of offered textiles – from vivid colours to graphic patterns – that can be combined to create contrasting compositions (on the large and medium versions) or colour-blocked in a single hue (for all three). An exuberant take on a familiar form, the Toto lamp from Hem brings a joyous burst of colour and light to any room.
For Istanbul-based SANAYI313, beauty can be found just about anywhere – including the defunct and converted auto repair shop where the design studio operates. Taking inspiration from warehouse architecture and the industrial elements found in auto repair shops, SANAYI313’s latest series of furniture is crafted from the hard-wearing materials synonymous with the automotive industry – stainless steel, painted metal and glass – as well as ones that signal the refinement and sophistication of classic automobile interiors – leather and maple burl veneer.
Included in the six-piece series, described by the designers as “a study in bulky forms,” are the 14313 lounge chair, the 19313 daybed and the 33313 coffee table – all made from maple burl veneer that gives the impression of thick slabs of thickly veined marble (leather upholstery is available for the lounge chair and daybed). With unique monolithic appearances and an understated curiosity, the new furniture elements (which also include a dining table and new versions of the studio’s signature Twin side table) express the elegant minimalism and high-quality craftsmanship that SANAYI313 is known for.
Expanding its collection of seemingly simple and circular furniture, Danish brand TAKT presents its new Bow chair, designed by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility. Defined by its graceful, sweeping lines and slender profile, the Bow chair represents an ambitious undertaking that marries the designers’ signature approach – one of both elegance and rigor – and the brand’s commitment to sustainability, longevity and genuine circularity.
Developed in a manner similar to how a tailor uses a pattern to cut fabric, the efficient design of the chair is such that the back and arms are cut from a single piece of oak plywood and supported by a simple A-frame wood-dowel structure; the generously wide seat has a considered waterfall edge for added comfort. In keeping with TAKT’s eco-conscious ethos, the Bow chair arrives as easy-to-assemble individual components, a method that decreases carbon emissions from shipping as well as consumer costs. Each element of the chair (as with all of TAKT’s furniture) is repairable or replaceable to substantially extend its end of life. Made from certified moulded oak in natural or black-stained, Bow can be upholstered in fully-traceable leather from SPOOR (in tan or black) or in a selection of Hallingdal wool from Kvadrat.
Celebrating its 85th anniversary this year, Vipp will be reintroducing its iconic pedal bin and accessories collection in uncoated stainless steel, a material that nods to the brand’s steel craftsmanship heritage. Originally designed in 1939 by founder Holger Nielsen for his wife Marie’s hairdressing salon (and part of the MoMa’s permanent architecture and design collection since 2009), the pedal bin has become one of the company’s most recognizable pieces, and this new iteration showcases its enduring quality.
Along with the five-sized pedal bin, Vipp’s bathroom accessories – soap dispenser, toothbrush holder and toilet brush – have also been stripped clean of their powder-coated colouration and rendered in the raw, polished stainless steel, lending them a historic and authentic aesthetic. Timeless yet modern, the Vipp pedal bins and bathroom elements that comprise the Stainless Steel collection (which will be available in September 2024) will be introduced along with the modular aluminum V3 kitchen, a new swivel chair and office desk (in aluminum and marble) and new upholstered furniture pieces for the Open-Air outdoor collection.
Material-driven and sustainably focused, these new product introductions are among the many not to be missed.
