A romp through Candy Land. That’s how one might aptly describe the collaboration between French furniture brand Roche Bobois and Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos.
Known for her fantastical creations (she just completed a gargantuan, 12-metre-tall ceramic wedding cake in the U.K., atop which couples can actually exchange vows), Vasconcelos debuted seating for the manufacturer that feels as delectable as a box of bonbons. In fact, it’s called the Bombom indoor–outdoor collection, and its centrepiece is a series of organically shaped sofas with adjustable back cushions whose pretty upholstery was inspired by the pastel-painted houses in Lisbon’s Old Town.
Shown at both Salone del Mobile and the brand’s capacious Milan showroom, the launch was only part of the magic. Vasconcelos and her team had installed a 45-metre-long “Valkyrie” that hung from the ceiling and wound throughout the showroom interior. Intricate, multi-textured and colourful — embellished with lace appliqués, feathery tassels and multi-hued LEDs, dripping jewels and other adornments — the serpentine installation spoke to the artistry of two creative talents coming together.
On the occasion of the launch of Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos’s Bombom collection, Roche Bobois gave her free creative reign.
