The University of Melbourne presents a lecture by Matthias Sauerbruch entitled BAUWENDE – Architecture in the Climatic Turn. Sauerbruch will trace the paradigmatic shift guiding the architectural thinking of his practice in the context of ever-increasing climate awareness.
Early efforts concentrated on the reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions through intelligent architectural strategies. Comprehensive analysis of these projects led to additional criteria, such as user empowerment and exploration of cyclical models in construction.
Discussing selected examples of Sauerbruch Hutton’s varied portfolio that are dealing with the growing resistance of the natural and the urban environments, Matthias will propose the emergence of a “continued modernity” that employs the power of architecture to create sensual and supremely inhabitable urban environments.
