Inner Child: Playing With Design

This autumn, Artipelag presents a large-scale exhibition featuring 100 designers and artists that share an exploration of the inner child as a creative force. Through playful design and handcrafted objects, visitors are invited into a world where creativity takes centre stage, as a counter-reaction to the emotional turbulence and new technologies of our times.

The show takes the form of a storybook told through eight thematic chapters that celebrate joyful optimism, naïve simplicity and pure imagination. The objects on display at Artipelag reflect a return to analogue techniques and the satisfaction gained when using human imagination and making things by hand. The exhibition’s playful approach to design for adults ranges from worlds built from colourful blocks to soft textiles inviting humble embraces. The works in the
exhibition reflect how many creatives are reconnecting with their younger selves.

The exhibition features the most prominent designers and artists contributing to this movement in recent years, including Maarten Baas, Front, Yinka Ilori, Max Lamb, Humberto da Mata, Kusheda Mensah, Nick Ross, Gustaf Westman, Victoria Yakusha and Pierre Yovanovitch, among many others. The exhibition scenography has also been envisioned by an entire family — Dutch designers Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk along with their two young children, Ko and Puk. This unusual collaboration between parents and children shapes the exhibition’s playful and imaginative character.
