Local Geometry

United Contemporary is proud to present Local Geometry, a solo exhibition by Toronto-based artist Stefan Berg. Known for his evocative cityscapes, Berg transforms overlooked urban scenes into compelling reflections on the intersections of architecture, infrastructure, and nature. His work resonates with a profound sense of place, capturing the interplay of light, colour, and human impact on the landscape.

In Local Geometry, Berg brings a contemporary lens to the traditional practice of plein air painting, using geometry as the foundation for his explorations of Toronto’s urban environment. His works highlight the human imprint on the cityscape, offering a unique perspective on how architecture and infrastructure shape our lived experiences. This exhibition includes a landmark painting of the Ontario Science Centre, an iconic structure by architect Raymond Moriyama, currently slated for demolition. Berg’s depiction emphasizes the monumental presence of the building, inviting viewers to reflect on its legacy amid ongoing debates about Toronto’s evolving urban fabric.

Berg’s paintings often serve as dialogues with his previous works and art history. Some canvases in this exhibition, such as Cabin Interior and Main Square #11, began in 2013 and have undergone years of reworking, embodying his commitment to achieving dynamic compositions through persistent refinement. His process reveals a fascination with surfaces that feel “lived in and hard-won,” inviting viewers to engage deeply with his works and discover new layers over time. “My paintings are out there in the world. One always leads to another,” Berg states. “The experiences compound, merge together, and emerge as something uniquely different.”
