ROB|ARCH 2024: Beyond Optimization seeks to explore the growing presence of robotics in art, research, design, and construction that has changed the way we practice and think through our tools. Since 2012, when the first ROB|ARCH conference was held, the role of robotics in creative practices and manufacturing industries has grown, shifted, and evolved. Robots are no longer a shiny novelty restricted to niche research proposals but are now a fundamental technical tool for interfacing between digital and physical worlds.
ROB|ARCH 2024: Beyond Optimization will kick off with three days of intensive workshops led by eleven teams from a wide range of institutions. Workshops are available for all skill levels/previous experiences, and will engage various robotic tools.
Workshops:
- Exploring Centralization in Collective Robotic Construction
- Robotic 3D Printing of Biomaterials for Biologically Active Structures
- Branch Production
- Collaborative Augmented Assembly
- Collaboration between Design and Automated Fabrication
- Choreographing Cable Robots
- Robots in the Landscape
- Dropship Joyride
- Sculpting Space with On-Site Robotics
The following two-day conference will include presentations from paper authors, keynotes, from internationally recognized figures, good food and networking opportunities. The conceptual framework of ‘Beyond Optimization’ offers a rich prompt to both presenters and attendees: how can we reconcile the limitations of the ‘computable’ with the incomprehensible entropy of the real world? As complex contexts require complex solutions, we must move beyond sterile parametric models and embrace the messy, stochastic reality of the incomputable.
