
Seoul, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, launched the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in 2017 with the theme of ‘Urban Architecture‘ to deal with various issues derived from rapid urban growth and to restore a human-centered, eco-friendly city. The event returns in 2023.
Biennale is an Italian word meaning ‘every two years’, derived from the 1895 Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia), an international art exhibition held in Venice, Italy. It aims to form international exchange and discourse through Biennales in the field of architecture started as part of the Venice Biennale in 1968, and are currently holding biennales with the theme of architecture in various cities around the world, including Chicago, Rotterdam, and Hong Kong-Shenzhen.
The Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2023 (Seoul Biennale) aims to examine the current issues of cities around the world and seek alternatives with Seoul as the stage. Thematic exhibitions based on the themes of each round, city exhibitions featuring leading public projects in cities around the world, on-site projects discussing topics through the realism of Seoul, as well as participation programs such as international studios and educational programs. Various subjects living in the city, such as domestic and foreign experts, administrative agencies, and citizens, gather to provide a venue for drawing the future of Seoul.
