When designing the AL13 pool table for RS Barcelona, Luca Nichetto approached the common game from an unusual perspective — considering it not simply as a leisure piece, but an object that can shape a space and redefine the rhythm of those that gather around it.
The streamlined design emphasizes clean lines, material balance and an expression that is more aligned with contemporary domestic architecture than a traditional gaming table. Named for the symbol (AL) and atomic number (13) of aluminum on the periodic table, the AL13 pool table from RS Barcelona is made from aluminum that has been developed through die-casting and extrusion techniques to create a continuous shell that appears to be made from a single sheet of metal and wraps the playing surface and base, where two monolithic legs lend a striking silhouette.
The AL13 pool table is detailed with a leather-upholstered profile that runs along the entire perimeter; the natural leather introduces a tactile, soft and precise counterpoint to the strength of the metal.
Eschewing any superfluous elements, the pool table has a strong visual presence in its simplicity, with every curve, joint and detail a response to material and constructive logic. The aluminum used is elevated beyond a mere technical resource to become a compelling material able to communicate solidity and softness at the same time.
Reading like a piece of sculptural furniture, the considered design commands attention even when not in use. The table does not recede into the background but rather embraces the role of a statement-making centrepiece, one that embodies calmness and restraint as well as a rich material presence.
The AL13 pool table is constructed in the standard size of 2.4-metres (8 feet) long and available in four curated colours: Dark Green, Terracotta, Dark Brown and Off-White.
