Designed by Milan-based Studiopepe, the Coltre sofa from Muuto is a contemporary modular seating system that boasts plumply padded volumes to envelope the sitter with enduring comfort.
Named after the Italian word for “blanket” and inspired by the visual of snow settling gently on a landscape, the Coltre sofa from Muuto effectively translates the comforting and familiar feeling of being wrapped in a blanket into an architectural element.
Intent on creating a sense of softness that can be understood before it’s actually felt, Studiopepe appointed the Coltre sofa with generous, puffed-up volumes that rest seamlessly on a structured frame.
To define the puffed volumes, parallel stitched lines create distinction and a pleasing rhythm. Like that soft blanket of snow, the upholstery textile is draped over the supporting structure in a way that allows its softness to be expressed. When viewed in profile, the Coltre sofa reveals its tactile layers similar to an architectural section.
A modular system, the Coltre sofa is comprised of multiple pieces (centre/chaise, corner, angled, ottoman) that can be easily configured and reconfigured to create expansive seating landscapes, corner-hugging arrangements, compact and intimate settings, circular sofas and more; the armless modules can also stand alone as inviting lounge chairs.
Optional armrest cushions maximize the modular concept, which was inspired by Studiopepe’s interest in art and installations and “how the placement of individual forms can alter our perception of a space.”
The base and frame of the Coltre sofa are made from wood and steel, with beech legs lifting it off the ground; the foam-and-fibre fillings can be wrapped in a wide range of textured textiles in multiple colour options.
