The Craft Work collection from Luum Textiles is the latest series by creative director Dorothy Cosonas, who was inspired by the worlds of art and fashion. The six new textiles in the collection — Gigi, Roam, Dori, Haze, Etch and Calm — merge the distinct characteristics of hand-made techniques with modern-day machine methods resulting in uncommon patterns that are practical, easily useable and sustainable.
The six textiles in the Craft Work collection from Luum Textiles include three upholsteries, one multipurpose fabric, one woven wallcovering and one drapery; each fabric is made in collaboration with six skilled mills around the world. Working together, the complementary designs offer a fresh visual language that is woven together through forward-looking colour sense and considered details.
Inspired by classic tweed suiting, Gigi is crafted with a blend of bouclé and specialized circular knitted yarns in both the warp and weft. The multidimensional upholstery weave combines polyester, viscose, acrylic, wool and cotton, which gives it a luxuriously soft and textured surface. Gigi is available in eight colours: Café, Waterlily, Provence, Boutique, Merlot, Tower, Boulevard and Avenue.
Referencing the abstract details of Gustav Klimt’s landscapes, Roam is a full-coverage textural constellation of tones. The upholstery fabric has an organic and speckled look that is the result of a high-twist, tri-colour bouclé yarn in the weft; the considered colour and value placement lend the textile an unexpected surface patterning, one where each tone appears to gently float above the ground. Roam is available in 10 colours: Prairie, Safari, Highlands, Wilderness, Labyrinth, Garden, Topiary, Rainforest, Seaside and Cityscape.
Dori is a one-of-a-kind multicolour upholstery that was inspired by Josef Albers’s colour work, the ready-to-wear pieces from Loewe fashion house that were derived from Anni Alber’s weavings, and the tactile mixed-media art of Joana Choumali. Each distinct section of the fabric is embroidered separately on a recycled polyester and linen base cloth. Tightly packed, the stitchings reveal an interplay of colour, texture and stitch types that work together to form a surface durable enough for contract applications. Dori is available in seven colours: Whisper, Emerald, Azure, Indigo, Beetroot, Harvest and Lunar.
A versatile, bleach-cleanable multipurpose textile (suitable for upholstery, wrapped walls, panels and screens), Haze elevates a simple basket weave with a chenille yarn in the weft. The fabric is woven from 75 per cent recycled polyester, with the undyed greige elements undergoing a specialized cationic and disperse piece-dye process that gives each a nuanced two-tone heathered look. Haze is available in 16 colours: Cottontail, Beach, Sesame, Ginger, Pistachio, Jade, Ray, Spice, Pale, Violet, Tide, Cosmic, Mist, Storm, Night Owl and Hibernate.
A fresh approach to direct glue wall offerings and bleach-cleanable woven wallcoverings, Etch has a micro chenille in the weft that lends movement to the surface through a subtle cross-hatched effect. Made from 67 per cent post-consumer recycled polyester, the wallcovering provides interiors with a refined, tactile backdrop; it is available in 10 colours: Cocoon, Hemp, Cattail, Jute, Straw, Tussah, Raindrop, Tin, Silver and Ash.
The sixth offering in the Craft Work collection from Luum Textiles, Calm is a wide-width, digitally printed ombré drapery directly inspired by both nature and fashion. The drapery is woven from 100 per cent Trevira CS polyester, which is then printed with a sophisticated semi-sheer pattern defined by an uninterrupted painterly watercolour effect. Calm is available in five colours: Tranquil, Desert, Serene, Rain, Twilight and Zen.
