To develop the Fractal Findings collection of carpet tiles, commercial flooring manufacturer Mohawk took a science-based approach to create patterns for human-centred built environments.
The Fractal Patterns collection from Mohawk was designed in collaboration with Austrian-based studio 13&9 Design along with Dr. Richard Taylor of the University of Oregon, a specialist in how bioinspiration can improve health and wellbeing.
Dr. Taylor’s research evidences that nature’s fractal patterns can contribute to a significant reduction in stress as well as greatly improve cognitive function. With the carpet tiles in the Fractal Findings collection, those patterns are translated into two carpet tiles styles that are intended to bolster a sense of wellbeing and productivity in workspaces and other commercial settings.
Focused on mid-D value fractal patterns – those that fall in the middle range of complexity and are believed to be the most aesthetically and visually appealing to humans – the two carpet styles in the Fractal Findings collection from Mohawk are called discoverD and eploreD, and both are offered in a range of neutral base colours and bold accent tones.
With the discoverD style, inspiration came from the elaborate patterns of animal tracks found in the wild. Influenced by the migratory paths of birds, mammals and insects, discoverD evokes sense of calm and tranquility in interior environments.
The exploreD style revisualizes the dynamic fractured planes of sea ice that float into polar oceans and is intended to interject wonder and excitement to commercial and corporate spaces.
Both discoverD and exploreD are available in 12 colourways: Marmot, Portage, Snow Dome, Sable, Caribou, Windswept, Grand Pacific, Silverthorne, Bearpaw, Raven, Serene and Beluga.
The carpet tiles in the Fractal Findings collection from Mohawk are made using ColorStrand solution-dyed nylon fibre with an EcoFlex Matrix backing, materials that minimize environmental impact and make the sustainable collection Living Product Challenge Petal Certified.
