When devising the Hinx lamp collection for Normann Copenhagen, head designer Simon Legald drew inspiration from his own childhood memories of playing hopscotch with a hinkesten — the small, flat glass or stone marker that is tossed onto the game grid to indicate which square will be skipped. 

Translating this moment of nostalgia into a playful yet refined contemporary lighting object, Legald placed a solid, glass-like ring atop the opal glass shade.

Simple yet visually impactful, the ring block is made from tinted polyester resin and adds a splash of colour to the pendant fixture, while the opal glass shade features a matte etched finish. Together, the two elements play with contrasting translucencies and weights to create a pleasing visual balance.  

With the Hinx lamp from Normann Copenhagen, soft and evenly distributed light is diffused through the matte white spherical shade, contributing to a welcoming atmospheric setting. The polyester resin ring anchors the design with a compelling sculptural presence; the appearance of the chunky ring also changes depending on whether the lamp is on or off. When on, the material seems to glow from within and, when off, it reads as a more solid colourful accent.

While the design of the Hinx lamp is rooted in childhood play, the expression is one of calm and refinement, allowing the pendant fixture — which is suspended from a four-metre-long white textile cord — to easily find a home in a variety of interior styles and settings, adding a graphic element to private residences as well as restaurants and bistros, other hospitality venues and workspaces.
