Swedish manufacturer TreCe has been a leading supplier of storage, recycling and waste furniture for more than 50 years, specializing in design-forward solutions for offices and public environments. Its recently launched KLOSS modular recycling system – designed by Kauppi & Kauppi – is no exception.
When developing the modular furniture system, designers Johan Kauppi and Nina Kauppi – co-founders of the Swedish studio – took inspiration from the building blocks they used to play with as children, intending for it to be used in much the same way.
Each of the three modules that comprise KLOSS were given different yet basic shapes (one fully square, one with a rounded corner and one with a straight back and rounded front) that can be used individually or grouped snuggly together to create a range of multi-bin formations – standing in side-by-side rows, wrapped around an outer corner, angled to fill an inner nook, placed against a wall, encircling a column and more. No matter the configuration, the lightweight bins can be easily disconnected and regrouped elsewhere.
The KLOSS modular system can be specified with adjustable legs or wheels and equipped with a variety of open tops and soft-closing lids; an integrated bag holder is included with each bin and an optional separate inner container that prevents leakage can also be added.
Adding further visual appeal to the system is a cohesive set of graphic symbols that easily and immediately identify the purpose of each bin. Addressing all manner of trash, the symbols are printed on a transparent label in white or anthracite and include: Waste, Plastic, Bottles/Cans, Bottles, Carton, Cans, Metal, Organic, Paper Cups, Clear Glass, Colored Glass and Paper.
The bins (which can hold between 62 and 68 litres of waste) are made from steel (20 per cent recycled) and the inner containers are made from 90 per cent recycled ABS plastic and are offered in 11 standard RAL colours – White, Warm Grey, Anthracite, Brilliant Blue, Pearl White, Olive, Forest Green, Chocolate, Saffron, Old Pink and Wine Red – with the option to customize using other non-standard RAL colours.
KLOSS was recently awarded the winner of the German Design Award 2024 for Excellent Product Design.
