Designed by Jasper Morrison as a modern reinterpretation of the classic Italian trattoria chair, the Pack chair from Hay conceals sophisticated technical considerations within its seemingly simple frame.
Referencing Morrison’s “super normal” design philosophy — in which designs should be almost unassuming yet highly functional — the Pack chair is defined by its fuss-free and balanced proportions that emphasize its utility.
The first chair designed by Morrison for Hay, the Pack chair replaces the woven straw or raffia cord seat of its inspiration with a moulded seat and backrest made from 80 per cent post-consumer recycled polypropylene blended with wood fibres; a plywood backrest is also an option as a natural counterpoint to the plastic seat. Solid oak is used for the dowel-like legs and frame.
As its name implies, the Pack chair arrives flat-packed and is easily assembled through a logical arrangement (with the included hardware): With the backrest pre-attached to the back legs, the slender solid oak back and front legs are fixed in place to joining elements under the seat shell; if the upholstered version is selected, the fabric cover is easily clicked into place directly onto integrated grooves along the seat’s edge.
The Pack chair from Hay was devised with disassembly and circularity in mind, meaning that all pieces can be removed, repaired or recycled.
Divided into two variations — the unupholstered Pack 10 and the upholstered Pack 11 — the chair is available with a range of colours for the seat and back that complement the oiled finish of the oak legs: Hull Red, Chalk Grey, Ash Blue, Palm Green, Graphite Brown — with the Graphite Brown version also offered with an Iron Black oak frame.
A range of foam-covered fabric seat covers is available for Pack 11 — including Kvadrat’s Remix, a durable wool-nylon blend (in five colours) and Steelcut, a worsted wool (in five colours), along with the 100 per cent olive-leaf tanned leather Grano (in Cognac or Black). The Pack chair is suitable for use in private homes as well as commercial and hospitality spaces.
