Penguin Wooden Lounge Chair by Audo

Originally designed by Danish designer Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1953 as part of an exploration of sculptural seating, the Penguin Wooden lounge chair from Audo has been updated and reissued for today’s modern interiors.

The Penguin Wooden lounge chair maintains its essential characteristics that were designed by Kofod-Larsen, ones that were shaped by the “modest discipline of mid-century Danish furniture making, where form is resolved through proportion and material rather than unnecessary expression.”

A mid-century modern lounge chair with brown textured upholstery and wooden legs sits on a light speckled floor near a window with natural light.

A reflection on the designer’s understanding of how a chair can marry visual lightness with physical support, the Penguin Wooden lounge chair harmoniously combines a solid oak frame with softly contoured seating surfaces. Each element of the chair complements and supports the next instead of competing for attention.

The Penguin Wooden lounge chair is offered in two variations: The first features a fully upholstered seat and back, which softens the silhouette and creates an enclosed seating experience; while the second has a lighter expression maintained by pairing a solid oak frame with a form-pressed veneer back and upholstered seat.

Both interpretations are offered in natural or red-stained oak or walnut, with both wood options allowing the character of the material to shift between warmth and depth, depending on its context. A range of fabric and leather upholstery options is available for the seat and back.

The compact size of the Penguin Wooden lounge chair from Audo makes it ideal for smaller residential spaces as well as for hospitality interiors and other settings where seating is required to be visually restrained while not compromising comfort.
