Reef and Tide rugs Carpet Edition

Milan-based design studio lualdimeraldi took inspiration from the principle that water can generate form for its new Reef and Tide rugs for Carpet Edition.

Recognizing water as both a primordial element and silent force that shapes organic forms, carves rock, smooth stones and etches ripples in the sand, Matteo Lualdi and Matteo Meraldi (who co-founded their studio in 2018) devised the two rugs with fluid volumes, variations in heights and intentional irregularities.

Evoking the natural beauty of stones smoothed by water and time, the Reef rug from Carpet Edition features a distinct and harmonious system of irregular geometries. With soft borders and delicately rounded corners, the rug boasts both organic balance and visual fluidity.

Arranged like a mosaic, the Reef rug interlocks circles, ovals and polygons in a seemingly spontaneous arrangement of stones on a landscape that has been shaped by the sea. The rug was devised with differing pile heights that introduce varying layers of depth, which emphasizes a play between light and shadow. Hand-tufted using New Zealand wool, Reef is available in an elegant Lunar Gravel colourway and a standard size of 235 x 300 centimetres.

Meanwhile, the Tide rug from Carpet Edition interprets the ripples and undulations left on sand dunes by wind or water. Balancing rhythm, repetition and variation, the visual complexity of these dunes are encapsulated by lines that seem to emerge and recede along the surface of the rug.

This visual movement of the Tide rug is achieved through differing pile heights that create crests and hollows, like the undulating forms that water leaves on sand as it retreats back to the sea. Hand-woven on a loom, Tide features a base made from Indian wool and relief decorations made from New Zealand wool. Tide is available in Quite Sand and in three sizes: 170 x 240, 200 x 300 and 300 x 400 centimetres.
