After an in-depth collaborative effort with Dutch design and research firm Studio RENS, Wolf-Gordon has relaunched its Scuffmaster brand of paint with an expanded palette of 100 curated colours. The comprehensive undertaking began with a deep dive into Wolf-Gordon’s Scuffmaster catalogue to establish the most popular colours from across the nine architectural finishes (ranging from soft matte and eggshell to luminous sprayed- and brushed-on metallics) that comprise the overall paint portfolio.
Renee Mennen and Stefanie van Keijsteren of Studio RENS then narrowed that number down to 60 before adding 40 new concept colours to fill in the gaps they found in the palette. Organized on a 10-by-10 grid, the new offerings celebrate the unique finishes and qualities of the Scuffmaster paints. The nine new Scuffmaster finishes are:
Solid Metal: Expressing unparalleled radiance, Solid Metal is a spray-applied mix of bold metallic colour and high-performance qualities. It can be used on walls, columns and elevator doors and is available in 26 colourways.
EnviroMetal: Brushed or rolled on, EnviroMetal mimics the impression of a highly skilled metalsmith. Suitable for walls, columns and elevator doors that cannot be sprayed, the metallic is easy to touch up. Available in 17 colourways.
Ambient Metallic: A tonal eggshell undercoat serves as a matte backdrop to the sparkling metal effect in Ambient Metallic, a moody finish reminiscent of everything from a warm sunset and smoldering embers to light refracted through raindrops. It adds glint and glisten to walls, common areas and architectural details when illuminated and is available in six colourways.
Ambient Design: Somewhat understated when compared to most others, Ambient Design is a waterborne acrylic-polyurethane blend that has a pure tonal texture and, since the surface treatment helps hide scuffs and stains, is formulated for heavy-use areas that require frequent scrubbing and washing. Available in six colourways.
Burnished Metallic: Revealing traces of a handheld paintbrush that was dipped in metallic pigment, Burnished Metallic has an eggshell base and a luminous topcoat that combine to add texture and a painterly quality to high-traffic areas and architectural features. Available in six colourways.
Armor/Armor XL: In no way subdued, Armor celebrates the energy and daring of the punk rock scene. Glossy dots are scattered across the surface to add visual interest and noticeability in high-traffic corridors and medical areas and on heavy equipment. Forty-five-times more durable than traditional paint, it is available in six colourways. An amped up version, Armor XL is specially engineered for heavy-abuse areas and can be used to protect corridors, stairwells and other spaces. Base and effect coats can be mixed and matched as desired.
ScrubTough and ScrubTough Max: With deep opacity and a highly cleanable, stain-resistant surface, ScrubTough is suitable for coating entryways, corridors and other areas where durability is needed. In 15 colourways; ScrubTough Max, meanwhile, is a low-VOC eggshell ideal for walls, doors, trim and other architectural features in high-traffic commercial interiors. Available in seven colourways.
Vapor/Vapor Luxe: Expressing the qualities of movement found in nature, the subtly speckled Vapor can be used for feature walls, entryways or just about any room in the house (available in seven colourways), while Vapor Luxe is an artisanal finish combining an eggshell paint colour with a stunning metallic patterned topcoat; suitable for use in restaurants, reception areas and other hospitality settings, it is available in five colourways.
Smooth Pearl: Light, airy and almost magical, Smooth Pearl evokes haute couture, the pureness of an oyster’s pearl or the depth of a glistening night sky. Offered as a flat, satin or high-gloss protective clear coat, the mica-infused finish effortlessly highlights walls, partitions and architectural features. Available in 11 colourways.
