Sideways lounge chair and Sideways coffee table by Rikke Frost for Carl Hansen & Søn

Danish industrial designer Rikke Frost has added two new elements to her Sideways series for Carl Hansen & Søn – a lounge chair and coffee table that are defined by their organic shapes and natural materials.

Companion pieces to the Sideways sofa – the asymmetrical sofa Frost first introduced in 2020 whose design encourages natural conversation – the new Sideways lounge chair and Sideways coffee table reflect a similar expression of classic materials and modern, rounded shapes.

Elegantly combining solid wood, soft upholstery and natural paper cord, the Sideways lounge chair (RF 1904) features a seat and backrest that are so firmly padded that their coverings remain smooth and crease-free – a feat mastered by only the highly experienced of upholsterers.

Like with the preceding sofa for Carl Hansen & Søn, the back of the lounge chair is detailed by handsome paper cords, whose pacing and delicateness lends the seat a sense of lightness. Two woods are available – FSC-certified oak or walnut – for the frame and multiple textiles are offered for the upholstery.

With the Sideways coffee table (RF 1905), a reversible tabletop with two different surfaces sits within a solid wood (oak or walnut) frame and allows for the mixing of materials – oak or walnut on one side and laminate on the reverse (with an Italian marble version also available). Seeming to gently rest on rich brass fittings (which contrast beautifully with the wood tones), the upper reversible tabletop is mirrored by a lower all-wood, fixed shelf in the same size.

Taking the circle as inspiration for the Sideways series, Rikke Frost (who runs her eponymous studio out of Aarhus, Denmark) notes how the shape represents unity and a positive emotional connection to harmony and balance.
