A modular, acoustic wall tile, Søuld Fragments is Spinneybeck‘s latest series designed in partnership with Søuld, the Danish material manufacturer known for its eco-friendly, recyclable and carbon-storing alternatives to traditional building materials. 

With Søuld Fragments, offcuts leftover from the production of full eelgrass panels are repurposed into modular acoustic wall tiles, giving the already sustainable material a second chance at life and ensuring a circular, zero-waste manufacturing process.

The eelgrass used for Søuld products is a renewable local marine plant that is deeply tied to Danish culture — a roof-thatching material dating back to the 1600s, it was recognized by Søuld for its sustainable possibilities and has been transformed into a range of thoughtfully designed acoustic wall treatments. 

The offcuts are mounted onto an MDF structural backing, which allows for direct-glue mounting (with a heavy-duty construction adhesive) on vertical surfaces in contract and residential settings.

Søuld Fragments from Spinneybeck includes two pattern elements (A and B) that are designed to be rotated 90 degrees, allowing for the creation of near-endless compositions in horizontal, vertical and multi-directional installations. Combining raised portions with lower ones, the tiles can create three-dimensional shadows while also providing a sense of rhythm; natural variations in material and colour mean that no two panels are alike, ensuring one-of-a-kind applications. 

Containing no formaldehyde, chemical irritants or other harmful substances, eelgrass acoustic panels contribute to LEED certification and have an NRC rating of 0.7.
