Stack Collection Bill Amberg Studio

With the recently released Stack collection, Bill Amberg Studio reimagines premium leather off-cuts and waste as a hardy structural medium.

Stack Collection Bill Amberg Studio

Originally an in-house material exploration, the Stack collection includes a desk, a console table and two coffee tables (one rectangular, one square), all of which are visually engaging and highly tactile.

A wooden dining table with a dark, vertically striped top and a cylindrical base, next to a chair with thin green legs.

To create the tables in the Stack collection, Bill Amberg Studio took inspiration from the traditional cobbler technique of building stacked leather heels for shoes.

Two low wooden tables with rounded corners and thick cylindrical legs, one light-toned and one dark-toned.

For the tables in the collection, hundreds of strips of leather off-cuts are stacked laterally, then compressed and bonded and finally meticulously sanded to develop a smooth, stable and unexpectedly tactile surface; the variations in the leathers also lend the tabletops a unique landscape of colour. The multi-toned, stacked leather surfaces are supported by frames and legs made from either English Walnut or English oak.

The debut of the Stack collection as a complete furniture series follows a number of bespoke commissions, which spurred studio founder Bill Amberg to hand-build a special machine that applies the immense pressure needed to bond stacked leather.

This machine allowed for the process to be refined and repeated, making the production of the Stack tables possible on a larger scale while also opening up the application to other furniture pieces, interiors and architecture.

By giving a new life to waste materials, the Stack collection continues Bill Amberg Studio’s long-standing commitment to recycling and repurposing materials.
