With a silhouette shaped to subtly resemble a human torso, the Sun Home lamp by German interdisciplinary studio GRAU makes a friendly and approachable impression. Emitting a broad spectrum of light in 360-degrees, the sculptural table lamp mimics the natural transition of the sun, dimming from a crisp and clear light to a Deep Sunset Orange setting. Similar to the sun, the light increases the production of melatonin, the relaxation hormone that has a calming effect on the human body.
The body of the Sun Home lamp is made from hardy ash wood, which has been CNC milled and sanded to achieve a super-smooth surface; a light stain (Sand or Black) is applied that allows the unique grain of the wood to shine through – just as no two wood grains are alike, no two lamps are alike. Adding to this individuality, an edition number is lasered into the base of each lamp.
A special processing technique gives the mouth-blown glass oval diffuser a particularly matte finish, which further enhances the emitted light’s positive attributes. The light is turned on and off via a handy button made from aluminum and finished with a multi-resistant powder-coated surface that matches the surrounding base.
Led by brothers Melchior and Timon Grau since 2021, exploratory studio GRAU is the next generation of Tobias Grau (the German lighting brand founded by their parents in 1986) and intends to change people’s perception of and connection to light. In keeping with this humanistic approach, the company plants one tree for every Sun Lamp sold.
