Exploring the quiet rhythm of movement, the Sway collection from Calico is one of the newest collections from the Brooklyn-based design studio. Beautifully capturing the natural arc and suspension of branches in motion, the collection is painted with fluid strokes and layered washes. The stylized willow branches seem to be gently adrift in the wind, bending and responding to air and light.
With elongated and overlapping lines, the Sway collection from Calico expresses a sense of depth that is achieved without an overwhelming density, with tonal variations allowing the composition to breathe.
The Sway collection is printed on woven sisal, a material selection that lends subtle texture to enhance to organic quality of the artwork. Seven colourways are available for the series: Aureline, Bower, Bramble, Glade, Liminal, Reed and Veer.
A pleasing neutral, Aureline draws the eye with soft watercolour strands that are at once delicate and defined; meanwhile, Bower, with its pale green tones, evokes a quiet tree canopy that is stirred by wind and light.
The Bramble colourway introduces organic motion with subtle lines that seem to ebb and flow like shifting branches, while Glade has a natural openness that lets light and structure intersect.
Blurring thresholds with subtle transitions, Liminal balances clarity with obscurity; and Reed evokes the gentle tones of earth and air.
The most dramatic colour option is Veer, which features a dark blue background overlayed with richer tones that emphasize directional flow and create a sense of motion across the surface.
Designed by Calico co-founder and creative director Rachel Cope, the Sway collection is at once structured and relaxed, organic and controlled and introduces a refined sense of movement and material presence to interior spaces.
