Living room featuring Ligne Roset's Noka sofa

Despite experiencing some of the darkest days during the winter months, Denmark ranks among the happiest countries on Earth. As the days shorten and the air cools, the Danish concept of hygge offers a reminder that warmth isn’t just about temperature — it’s about atmosphere. When it comes to design, thoughtfully chosen furnishings and accessories can help foster that sense of comfort and ease, creating a living space that encourages slowing down and staying in. Below, we’ve rounded up five pieces to help you curate a comfy space this fall.

1
Noka by Ligne Roset

Noka sofa by Ligne Roset

The sofa is centrepiece of the living room, and this loungy number designed by Sebastian Herkner for Ligne Roset is the perfect starting point to build a space around. Inspired by Japanese country houses, the Noka sofa sits like a building on stilts, its solid seat seemingly floating atop a set of planar legs. The low-slung form is deep and inviting, with high armrests and a subtly reclined backrest for supportive comfort. Meticulously tailored upholstery, in a variety of fabrics and finishes, emphasizes the sofa’s soft and organic curves. Thanks to its modularity, the collection can be configured to suit a variety of settings.

Kari Side Tables by Kettal

If the sofa is the focal point of the living room, the side table is something of an unsung hero. These options from Kettal not only provide the perfect resting place for a warm cup of tea or a mood-setting table lamp, they also bring sculptural beauty to residential settings. Recalling an updated take on the classic wooden Eames stool, the Kari side table by Konstantin Grcic embraces a modern interpretation of traditional African design influences. The result is two unique iterations that draw on circular and angular geometry, with the different bases sandwiched by two simple wooden discs. Though the tables are currently made from solid teak — which is lightweight and easily moved around, yet strong enough to be used as stools when extra seating is needed — Grcic designed the totem-like tables to accommodate other material variations in the future. While the designs are strong enough to stand alone, the two contrasting variations also pair beautifully together.

Loja Lighting Collection by Midgard

With daylight savings on the horizon, lighting is essential to every space in the home. But in the living room, the right fixtures go beyond utility to foster a cozy atmosphere. The Loja collection, designed by Sebastian Herkner for German lighting brand Midgard, is a case in point. The whimsical pieces resemble oversized mushrooms pulled straight out of an enchanted forest, with mouth-blown cylindrical glass columns each topped by a curvaceous paper shade. The flexible, water-repellent shades can be easily repositioned to change the proportion of direct or diffused light thanks to a circular cutout at the top, allowing users complete customization of a room’s ambience. Offered as both a table and floor lamp, as well as two pendant sizes, Loja can adapt to all manner of spaces.

The collection’s minimal material palette complements its understated design — and allows each lamp to be recycled at end of life. The paper, glass and steel components are slotted together without the use of adhesives, and the LED and transformer can be replaced without the use of tools, making the lamps simple to repair.

Crescendo Rug Collection by The Rug Company

Floorcoverings can go a long way in adding warmth to living spaces — and in the case of Kelly Wearstler’s Crescendo collection for The Rug Company, they can also add rich texture and graphic punch. Inspired by music, the collection leverages geometric forms and organic shapes to create six designs with a striking sense of rhythm. Take Arwen, for instance, a subtle checkerboard pattern that resembles a cozy patchwork quilt, made by combining raised cut-pile silk squares with a wool and nettle blend base. Runa, meanwhile, introduces a dynamic block pattern in two colourways — Clay and Pistachio.

Riven and Elowen both play with linework, with the former using multi-directional lines to create an angular effect, and the latter taking on a more linear quality. Crux imbues spaces with dimension, comprised of gradient silk blocks that come together to form a tonal composition. Spire is the boldest of the six patterns, with an abstract collage-like design offered in black-and-white and grey tone-on-tone variations. Each rug is hand-knotted in Nepal by artisanal weavers using traditional techniques and a variety of natural materials, including wool, silk, nettle and linen. Available in a range of neutral hues, the rugs are versatile enough to fit into any interior.

The integrated V-Class burner is not just engineered for lifelike flames and glowing embers; it also radiates warmth throughout the room for efficient zone heating. With an EnerGuide rating of 68 per cent, the LT2 offers significant energy savings and can operate entirely on battery power (without lights or WiFi), providing much-needed heat even during a power failure. Not to mention, Valor’s patented HeatShift technology redirects warmth away from wall surfaces, without using fans or electricity, to keep TVs and artwork placed above the unit in prime condition.
