Developed by German designer Sebastian Herkner for lighting brand Midgard, the new Loja lighting collection is a fresh and poetic interpretation of adjustable lighting, a key element found throughout Midgard’s wide-ranging catalogue.
Named after Finnish-American textile artist and sculptor Loja Saarinen (mother to Eero) the Loja lighting collection by Sebastian Herkner takes a simple yet effective approach to moving light – through the manual manipulation of its shade.
Made from flexible paper, the Loja lampshade has a sweeping silhouette and is placed atop a cylindrical column of translucent glass, which creates a gentle and glowing light gradient. The paper shade can be positioned and repositioned with ease, making it possible to alter a room’s atmosphere and mood by changing the proportion of direct or scattered illumination.
Meeting the high sustainability standards set out by Midgard, the Loja lighting collection by Sebastian Herkner is made from only three fully recyclable materials – paper, glass and steel.
Further, the lamps within the Loja collection are slotted together rather than glued, meaning all individual components can be separated and repaired by the user if necessary, and fully recycled at end of life. The LED and transformer can also be replaced without using any tools.
The Loja lighting collection from Midgard includes a table lamp, floor lamp and two sizes of pendant lamp, each of which has its own expressive personality. The water-repellent paper shade features a circular cut-out that allows it to swivel gracefully around the rounded top of the mouth-blown glass cylinder; in the case of the pendants, the shade sits and swivels directly on the bulb.
