Tradition Outdoor Lounge Series by Fritz Hansen

While in many parts of the world, outdoor furniture has a short season, that doesn’t mean that the design of al fresco spaces should take a back seat. This year’s launches prove that outdoor products can be every bit as comfortable, functional and stylish as their interior counterparts. And, thanks to manufacturing innovations, they are also durable enough to stand up to outdoor conditions — whatever the weather. Below, we’ve rounded up five standout collections that do just that:

1
ARIES Café Chair by Maglin Site Furniture
ARIES Café Chair by Maglin Site Furniture
Aries Café Chair

Comfortable. Portable. Adaptable. These were the three words Frank Crawford had in mind when developing the ARIES line of café chairs for Maglin Site Furniture. His cast-molded aluminum and steel design delivered on these promises, meticulously shaped for long-term comfort. Lightweight and stackable up to four high, ARIES can adapt to any outdoor setting — from school campuses to retail, hospitality and more — and then easily store away. But that doesn’t mean it can’t withstand the elements: Its steel components are rust-proofed for optimal longevity and are fully recyclable at end of life. With 16 glossy and six matte powder-coated colourways to choose from, from neutrals to vibrant hues, and optional armrests, ARIES can be customized to suit any space. And it pairs perfectly with other Maglin collections, including the Square Foro Wood Table or Battery Café Table, for a cohesive look.

A contemporary interpretation of traditional mid-century spindle furniture, this modular collection by Povl B. Eskildsen for Fritz Hansen — aptly dubbed the Tradition series — translates the brand’s signature Scandi style to an al fresco setting. The collection includes a lounge chair, corner/end and space modules, a pouffe and two tables that can be arranged into countless configurations. Each piece is hand-crafted from FSC-certified core teak wood — selected for its natural beauty, strength and durability — using seamless finger joints and cleverly concealed dado joints that lend the pieces a sense of fluidity. Fit for outdoor living, the cushions are made from quick-dry, open-cell foam upholstered in all-weather, mildew-resistant fabrics. The frame, meanwhile, is intended to develop a silvery-grey patina.

Ceramic Tables by Hay

Ceramic Tables

Muller Van Severen brings its signature affinity for colour to this new collection of indoor-outdoor ceramic pedestal tables for Hay. Though minimalist in form, the design playfully combines materials and textures to pleasing effect. Its sleek glazed porcelain tabletop, available in Warm White, Bordeaux, Light Mint and Bright Yellow, meets a slender steel-tube column and an exposed aggregate concrete base, studded with pebbles for a terrazzo-like effect. The durable design — including a hidden hook under the tabletop that allows for multiple tables to be ganged together — makes it an excellent choice for public spaces. Two sizes are offered: 73 H x 70 W cm and 90 H x 74 W cm.

Plains & Pods System by Landscape Forms

Plains & Pods System

This mix-and-match series of seating, surfaces and planters by Landscape Forms offers the building blocks to create cohesive outdoor setups. Designed by London-based studio Industrial Facility, the minimalist collections work together seamlessly, but can also hold their own. The Plains seating, available in wide platform and skinnier beam configurations, both in varying heights and widths, features clean lines and architectural forms. The benches — made from naturally weathering jarrah wood, powder-coated metal, or both — can be placed side-by-side, layered, overlapped, branched, crisscrossed or stair-stepped to accommodate different seating positions and address unique site conditions; metal backs and attachable side tables can be added for further customization. The curvilinear Pods seating and planters, meanwhile, offer an organic counterpoint, combining wood-slat tops and metal bodies in a range of powder-coated colourways. Available in multiple heights and widths, they can be clustered together to form communal or private zones.

With its rich texture and refined palette, Warli’s Mirasol rug brings the coziness of the living room to the great outdoors. Handwoven by skilled artisans using traditional loom techniques, the design features a tactile cord overlay of mélange yarns and a flatweave base, all made from 100 per cent recyclable polypropylene rope. The two contrasting textures form a repeated raised X pattern with strong graphic impact — and a pleasingly tactile experience. Mirasol is available in five two-toned colourways — Brown/Teal, Teal/Silver, Silver/Olive Green, Dark Green/Canvas and Terracotta/Light Brown — and two standard sizes (200 x 300 and 300 x 400 cm) or custom sizing. Despite its residential sensibility, the rug is highly durable, UV stable, water repellant and can be stain-proofed and treated with a mould-resistant finish, making it equally well suited to commercial use, both indoors and out.
