During this year’s edition of Milan Design Week, exhibitors at Salone del Mobile and offsite destinations like Alcova showed a serious passion for dark cherry red furniture. Here, we round up everyone adding to the 2024 design trend’s momentum.
1
Gucci Ancora
At its local flagship, Gucci reimagined five Italian classics — including Tobia Scarpa’s Opachi vase for Venini, left, and the Acerbis Storet cabinet, right — in rich oxblood. Playing off the palette that defined its recent runway collection, each design was presented against an acid-green backdrop for maximum contrast.
2
Philía chair by Pedrali
Odo Fioravanti designed Pedrali’s woven Philía chair to encapsulate la dolce vita. The steel-framed seat is wrapped in PVC cords that intersect in the middle for bonus back support.
3
Tacito sideboard by Magis
Designer Alessandro Stabile had a clear mission with his Tacito sideboard for Magis: Create storage that isn’t compromised by its hinges. To wit, the unit’s sound-absorbing recycled polyester doors open in opposite directions and conceal their hardware behind elegant fabric folds. The furniture takes on a cherry vibe in this dark red version — complete with cherry stem-like feet.
4
Big red by Uma Objects
Big Red, a table and bench set by Uma Objects and Holloway Li, held court at one of the two historic villas that hosted this year’s edition of Alcova. The high-gloss furniture is crafted like a surfboard, its foam core covered in infusion-moulded fibreglass with a fully weatherproof dark cherry red finish.
5
Allure O’ Dot tables by B&B Italia
Expanding her family of Allure O’ tables for B&B Italia, Monica Armani introduced a new range of bistro, coffee and side tables with glass tops (in smoked or transparent finishes) that are accented with a solid centre — hence the range’s name: Allure O’ Dot.
6
Wassily chair by Knoll
The Wassily chair’s gone in for a dye job. At its Salone del Mobile stand, Knoll debuted an ultra-matte red finish that underlines the Bauhaus-era seating’s enduring appeal. Even better, the furniture helps to hide dark cherry red stains.
7
Bamboo Mood console by Roche Bobois
Franco-Chinese artist and designer Jiang Qiong Er teamed up with Roche Bobois to create Bamboo Mood, a collection that honours the woody plant as a symbol of resilience — bending, but rarely snapping. An oak-veneered MDF console table evokes the slanted nodes that define bamboo’s densely clustered stalks.
8
Picea table by Molteni&C
With its hourglass-shaped Picea table, Molteni&C introduces the perfect outdoor pedestal for an evening glass of Merlot. Fabricated in ceramic, the Vincent Van Duysen design boasts a wide base that steadies the table against accidental bumps.
9
Pulpopolis by Kickie Chudikova
At Alcova, Kickie Chudikova’s jellyfish-like Pulpopolis lamps cast fresh light on the ocean floor. Each one is handcrafted in Murano glass with a flared lid that lifts up when it comes time to recharge the interior orb.
10
Dudet sofa by Cassina
Cassina and Patricia Urquiola conceived the new two-seater version of Dudet as a dining table sofa — perfect for laid-back meals in hospitality and residential projects alike.
