Kashima sofa by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset

In 2023, Ligne Roset re-issued its iconic Kashima sofa model, originally designed by Michel Ducaroy in 1976. Dubbed the “comfortable Chesterfield,” Kashima blends traditional English comfort with modern design sensibilities and made-in-France craftsmanship. This reissue brings a fresh update to a classic, maintaining its distinctive aesthetic while enhancing its technical sophistication.

The Kashima sofa is renowned for its all-foam construction, providing an unexpectedly soft comfort within its generously curved and rounded shapes. Integrated armrests, lumbar support, and a headrest contribute to its overall ergonomic design.

Belying its plush exterior, the sofa is composed of high-density foams that ensure durability and longevity. The denser the foam, the longer the seat will last, a principle clearly upheld in Kashima’s design.

One of the unique features of the Kashima is its fully quilted, expertly tailored cover, which creates “pinched” seams at the corners, reinforced by interior laces. This detail adds a touch of whimsy to the otherwise classic form.

The seat’s nest-like shape cradles the user, offering a secure and cozy seating experience. Kashima’s standard seating height (38 cm) makes it both accessible and comfortable for a wide range of users.

Technically, Kashima stands out as the most elaborate all-foam seat in the Ligne Roset collection. It incorporates four densities of foam, each clad in a layer of polyester quilting for added comfort.

The seat cover itself is quilted with polyester foam, creating a double surface comfort that combines firm support with a soft exterior. The sofa’s structure includes polyether foam of varying densities, ensuring both firmness and resilience.

The reissued Kashima model offers multiple configurations, including a medium-sized loveseat sofa and a corner sofa with integrated armrests and a footstool. This flexibility allows it to be scaled to suit various spaces, ensuring it can serve as the centrepiece of any modern space. Its quilted upholstery, arranged in a grid formation, echoes the button-backed silhouette of a traditional Chesterfield while infusing it with a contemporary yet timeless flair.
