Landshapes Collection by Kohler

To describe Daniel Arsham as multi-talented seems almost inadequate. Co-founder of experiential, convention-busting design practice Snarkitecture, the New York–based creative is also a renowned visual artist, sculptor, scenographer, filmmaker and fashion, jewellery and shoe designer. Pervasive throughout his diverse body of work is his signature ability to fuse reality with an imagined time and place, and to conjure dreamlike worlds that defy categorization. Utilizing an array of geological materials — crystal, sand, selenite, volcanic ash, various stones — Arsham’s “future relics” are tactile, visually impactful and original. With his Landshapes collection, the designer brings his enigmatic approach to the bathroom in his second collaboration with Kohler, following his limited-edition 3D-printed Rock.01 vessel sink, which mimicked the look of stacked stones.

The Japanese-inspired vanity features exposed dovetail joints and clean, minimal lines, which are contrasted by decorative glass cabinet knobs and faucet handles whose asymmetrical forms express the beauty of water droplets running down a windowpane. Amorphic wood frames give the mirrors a playful attitude.

A masterful marriage of artistry and craft, Kohler’s Landshapes collection — which includes a Japanese-inspired vanity, a voluminous sink, a chiselled bathtub and mirrors with amorphous frames — is defined by asymmetrical nature-inspired forms and honest materials that coalesce in a truly delightful (if uncanny) way.

Made from delicate glass sheets draped over a spherical diffuser, the Landshapes collection’s lighting fixtures evoke a piece of billowing fabric.

Handcrafted by Kohler WasteLAB artisans, the tiles have a texture resembling sand deposits left by waves and are made from waste material and pottery scraps.

“For me, this was about taking items we constantly use every day and making them unique so that the tactile forms give the user pause,” says Arsham. For a room often considered a retreat, this collection adds a layer of playful sophistication.

Reminiscent of Daniel Arsham’s eroded sculptures, the freestanding bathtub appears to be hand-carved from a block of stone; in actuality, it is made from the brand’s durable Lithocast cast-resin material.

Kohler’s Landshapes Collection is Perfectly Peculiar
