“Our work,” explain Carlos Guijarro and Alex Ortega, “always aims to generate a visual tension.” From a refined wooden bowling set for Hermès to a slender bistro chair for Isimar, their Barcelona- and Berlin-based studio OrtegaGuijarro has amassed a distinctive portfolio of technical and poetic objects since its founding in 2017. Their latest design for German manufacturer ClassiCon follows suit.
Called Sol, the 51-centimetre-tall side table consists of three sheets of coloured glass — bronze, grey or royal blue — elegantly layered together. The precisely balanced composition is accented by rounded edges that add a subtle softness to its rigid geometry. As the light hits it, Sol’s intersecting planes overlap to create moments of clarity and translucency or intense colour. The result is a singular design that marries sculptural presence with graceful functionality.
