When AZURE launched the AZ Awards back in 2011, more than 600 submissions from 25 countries poured in for consideration. Flash forward to this year — the 10th anniversary of the competition, which honours the best in global architecture, design, concepts and more — and a record 1,200-plus projects from nearly 50 nations were submitted, suggesting just how much the AZ Awards has grown in impact, scope and stature.
On September 18, the 2020 awards were revealed during a milestone online ceremony studded with appearances by a raft of A&D luminaries. All 20 of this year’s winners — from a stunning hotel/library in rural China to a shapely sofa by Yabu Pushelberg for Molteni&C to a groundbreaking forest tower in Denmark — are detailed in our October issue, as are the 48 Award of Merit recipients and the winners of the People’s Choice Awards. It’s a breathtaking range of work, compiled in a keepsake edition for a watershed year.
In addition to our AZ Awards roundup, October’s issue includes the sculptural new home of a Czech winery using architecture to promote terroir, British-Ghanaian designer Kusheda Mensah’s buzz-generating modular furniture, and a surf-inspired design scheme for a hip Vancouver taco joint.
