Brooklyn-based Danny Kaplan Studio recently introduced its Facet collection of sconces, a series of striking fixtures that celebrates meticulous craftsmanship and traditional slab-built forms through an intriguing choice of material.
Known for its handcrafted ceramic pieces that range from floor and table lamps and vessels to armchairs and tables, the Facet collection by Danny Kaplan Studio is an exploration of a new-to-the-studio material – metal.
Three distinct sconce designs comprise the Facet collection – Optical, Angle and Pyramid – with each one pushing the boundaries and expectations of modern lighting. Serving as both functional lighting elements and statement-making art pieces, the three wall sconces are informed by art deco motifs and emphasize strong geometric forms, sleek and streamlined designs and a sense of modern elegance.
With the Optical sconce, softness and severity are blended together into one sensational expression. Made from perforated brass, stainless steel or white-painted steel that are contrasted by flat sheets, the sculptural light fixture has a deeply patinated finish and compelling texture. Its cube-like form creates an optical illusion as light filters through the punctured metal with a warm and inviting glow, playing with depth and form.
A study in minimalist design and elegance, the angular lines of the Angle sconce evoke the hand-moulded clay slabs that Danny Kaplan Studio regularly works with. Simple yet refined, the wall light’s striking silhouette is a beautiful balance of geometry and suits a range of interior settings.
Taking inspiration from architectural motifs, the Pyramid sconce layers sheets of perforated metal (brass, stainless steel or white-painted steel) to create a unique interaction between light and shadow. Topped with a solid metal cap, the three-dimensional fixture brings depth and complexity to a space while maintaining a minimalist expression.
