London-based design duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have made some updates to their Olio collection for Royal Doulton. Originally released in 2015, the porcelain tableware series (which also includes sustainable wooden serveware and stainless steel cutlery) was an instant hit for its intentionally eclectic approach. Referring to “a miscellaneous collection of things,” Olio was created to be easily mixed and matched with existing pieces. “People don’t really have just one set of tableware in their cupboard,” the designers note. “They might buy a jug from this place and some plates from that place and some glasses from a trip to Italy.”
Sharing simple yet sophisticated silhouettes, the pieces are now available in a soft celadon blue, along with the rich black and classic white. The revisit also allowed Barber Osgerby to make some refinements to the forms and to further focus on the materiality by paring back the glazes and leaving the base exposed and unglazed on some of the pieces. With its authentic and functional design sensibility, the 14-piece Olio collection enhances everyday meals.
