The new Panorama collection of rugs from Australian/American rug-maker Armadillo was informed by numerous global influences and evokes the serenity of an old-world homestead surrounded by rolling hills. Comprised of five natural-fibre rugs – Thatch, Mason, Crest, Tempest and Genoa – the Panorama collection draws references from England, Belgium, Spain and Japan, while also paying homage to Australia’s one-of-a-kind pastoral heritage. Each rug is handmade in India and expresses its own sophisticated personality through various textures and patterns, while remaining a cohesive offering.
With a light pile of precise Persian knots, Thatch recalls the curated wabi sabi refinement of a sophisticated mountain chalet. Suitable for use in residential and light commercial settings, the hand-knotted rug with cotton fringe is available in four mineral tones – Dew, Concrete, Marsh and Pink Salt.
Hand-woven from New Zealand wool, the plush texture and robust boulder-like surface of the flat-weave Mason references rugged mountain terrains. Adding a layer of luxury to private living rooms and bedrooms, it is available in two rich colourways, Sangria and Yolk.
Crest translates a tree-lined horizon into a refined herringbone pattern with cotton fringe, with wool that has been carded and spun by hand and then hand-knotted into a surface with contrasting high pile and low weave. Durable enough for light commercial as well as residential use, it is available in two warm neutrals, Mica and Poplin.
The nubby texture of Tempest from the Panorama rug collection from Armadillo recreates far-flung vistas using premium undyed New Zealand wool that is hand-knotted to form furrowed lineaments in varying degrees of colour. Flat-woven on a vertical loom for a nuanced look, the single colourway Tundra has the appearance of fragments of earth visible through layers of snow.
Playing with the idea of rock striations, Genoa is the most linear of the five and uses an artisanal technique that wraps linen and wool yarns around thin rods that lends the stripes in varying widths a decidedly soft pile; the loose cotton fringe furthers the textural interest. Available in Sandalwood, a colourway that nods to cozy farmhouses.
