With his Port lighting series for Australian lighting company Rakumba, Sydney-based designer Tom Fereday celebrates the “purity and refractive nature of crystal” through sculptural glass monoliths.
A sophisticated contrast of materials and textures, the light fixtures in the Port series are made from optically pure crystal glass and hand-finished brass or aluminum bases.
The Port series features two versions – a table lamp and wall light – with each exhibiting a unique architectural form – Round or Stadium. Enhancing the specialness of each, the glass body can be flipped to create two moods and light interactions.
In one, an internal pyramid-like structure has a sand-blasted finish that lends a finely textured frosted effect, in the other, the pyramid is inverted to reveal its unfinished side that is polished to a pristine glimmer.
The LED module has a low profile to keep the focus on the sculptural quality of the lights: When turned on, the light source itself is nearly indiscernible while emitting an abstract yet warm glow. When turned off, the lights become curious object unto themselves.
Suitable for use in restaurants, bathrooms and powder rooms, the Port wall light delivers architectural impact through its well-balanced precious materiality and weighty proportions, while the Port table lamp makes a statement on reception desks, entry hallways or bedrooms. Six finishes are available for the metal bases: Satin Brass, Patina Brass, Satin Aluminum, Patina Aluminum, Black powder-coated and White powder-coated.
