1 Helio Chroma by Niche Modern
For over a decade, Niche Modern has been hand-blowing glass pendants in their Upstate New York studio. The latest member of their repertoire is Chroma, a twist on their Helio shape, which was created specifically to showcase Plumen CFLs. The Chroma family adds vibrant new colours including Storm, Cielo, Tangerine and Jade, as well as models in translucent and opaque glass.
2 Umbrella by Modoluce
Claiming inspiration from both Mary Poppins’ accessory of choice and the Starship Enterprise, Umbrella balances the reassuringly familiar and the cutting-edge. An array of ultra-bright LEDs fills the copper-finished lower disc, pointing upward to a second disc in white-painted metal, which downcasts a soft glow. Adjusting the distance between the two controls the intensity and spread of the reflected light.
3 Dendera by Hinterland
In Egyptian mythology, the ancients harnessed the power of electricity to light the Temple of Dendera millennia before Edison’s bulb. The extruded pyramid shape of this LED hanging lamp’s frosted acrylic diffuser lens pays homage to the myth, while the black walnut cap, oiled leather straps and solid brass fittings lend it a contemporary yet warm feel. It’s also available in ash and polished nickel.
4 Kazimir by Ladies & Gentlemen
Spotted at Sight Unseen Offsite during New York Design Week, Ladies & Gentlemen Studio’s Kazimir pendant is decidedly retro – an artful assemblage of geometric shapes of textured glass that’s a little bit Memphis and a little bit Deco. Polished brass fittings hold the luminaire together.
5 Stab light by Danese
Using traditional Bohemian glass techniques, French designer Arik Levy created this collection of elegant and richly hued handblown lamps, which was shown at Euroluce in April. The fixtures come in flashlight-reminiscent shapes in a variety of proportions and mounting options.
6 Mademoiselle by Lladró
At Euroluce, models in hoop skirts with broad-rimmed hats stood coquettishly around the booth of Lladró, as the Spanish porcelain manufacturer debuted the Mademoiselle series of chandeliers. Featuring a variety of figurines in voluminous dresses, it was the lighting show’s prettiest – bordering on precious – pieces on display.
7 Kushi by Kundalini
Evoking a minimalist Japanese style – and a giant white apple, too – Kushi is one of Kundalini’s most zen offerings. The opal diffuser, made of two layers of mouth-blown glass, appears as if pierced by a metal rod, in black, copper and brass.
