The Netherlands-based online retailer is known for collaborating with emerging designers, such as New York’s Alissia Melka-Teichroew and husband Jan Habraken, on limited runs of simple contemporary pieces. Now, they’ve added the Wendela Chair to their mainly black and white collection of furniture, lighting and accessories.
The elegant chair forms part of Maastricht designer Christoph Seyferth’s Serener line, which he began in 2008 in order to explore the idea of “anonymized design,” referring to those items that we use and are surrounded by on a daily basis but that seem to be generic yet are exceptionally well-designed and super-functional.
Though it sports an old-school look, the Wendela chair is nothing if not distinctive – it touts a curvaceous wooden seat created from a 1950s mould, attached to an aluminum base via traditional joinery. Wendela’s thin flexible seat comes in light or dark-stained layered beech, while the four-legged base is available in matte black, matte white or – for a bold effect – anodized gold. It’s waterproof and can be used indoors or out.
Wendela was launched at this year’s Maison et Objet and is available online at functionals.eu
