After restoring the exterior of a century-old building in Porto, architect Nuno Alves de Carvalho set out to completely transform the interior. The residence, home to an artist with an extensive collection, was completely gutted. To connect all four storeys, the architect inserted a 9.6-metre-tall multipurpose shelving unit in oriented strand board. The dramatic element separates the studio space from the residential zones on the first two levels, and allows the artist to show sculptures and other collected works on every floor.

On the third level, the OSB structure frames the kitchenette, which opens onto a lounge area. White-washed built-in storage and terrazzo flooring complete the minimalist interior, which is furnished with vintage tables and seating. Above, a loft-style bedroom can be glimpsed through the chainlink of the balustrade. In its entirety, the 148-square-metre interior shows how a singular design solution can achieve a work-life balance.
