For the launch of their product line, i29’s Jasper Jansen and Jeroen Dellensen scoured secondhand shops, vintage markets and Marktplaats (the Dutch answer to eBay) for sofas, chairs and lamps as well as outlandish pieces, such as colonial busts and relics of early computers. After repairing the pieces, the duo coated them with a solvent-free polyurea spray in a brooding matte grey by Krimpex Coating Systems. The protective finish is normally applied to swimming pools and flatbed trucks to prevent corrosion. It’s durable and sticks to virtually anything.

Displayed for the first time in a pop-up shop within the Amsterdam fashion boutique SPRMRKT, the pieces present a unifying aesthetic that seemingly negates the uniqueness of each piece, emphasizing the functional elements. Taken together, though, the products bear an arresting sculptural quality. Even the kinds of pieces one might find in a bourgeois interior – busts of notable figures, ornate chandeliers and cabriole-legged side tables – get a fresh new life.

The Amsterdam firm’s democratization of home furnishings first gained notoriety with its interior for Gummo, a Dutch advertising agency. The moody space is built on the theme of “reduce, reuse, recycle.” Set against stark white walls, every piece of locally sourced furniture, save for the computers, is painted black.

The AsGoodAsNew furniture line grew from this initial collaboration, with the help of a third partner, Krimpex. For its nascent brand, i29 has also teamed up with Vipp, manufacturer of the iconic pedal garbage bin. A limited-edition of Krimpex-treated bins are available at the AsGoodAsNew pop-up shop – open until the end of the year – in the SPRMRKT store.
