One of two new rugs designed in close collaboration with London-based industrial design studio Barber Osgerby, the Atlas rug from Kasthall was inspired by and named for the Atlas mountain range in North Africa.
Highly textural and replete with shifting tones, the Atlas rug from Kasthall has a double-weft construction that gives the floor covering an invitingly substantial tactility that is complemented by depth and tonal variation.
To achieve this, the rug is woven so that the warp threads are prominently visible within the weave. “The warp becomes part of the final texture — that’s quite rare,” says Edward Barber. The result is a surface that almost shimmers with a sense of life and movement.
Informed by “industrial craft, material honesty and graphic clarity,” the interplay of warp and weft lends the rug a layered characteristic that employs colour that is integrated deep into its structure.
To realize the Atlas rug, Barber Osgerby familiarized themselves with the rhythm, pace and constraints of the industrial loom. The designers allowed the tools and techniques of Kasthall’s mill to lead the way rather than trying to impose a predetermined and fixed aesthetic.
Intended for architectural interiors with a pronounced material integrity, the Atlas rug from Kasthall introduces a captivating presence that softens and complements.
Crafted in Kinna, Sweden, the Atlas rug is made using natural fibres and recycled materials — linen for the warp and wool for the weft — and is available in three rich colourways: Snow, Dune and Indigo. The rug is available in seven sizes as well as the option for custom sizing.
