With his Barricane chair collection for Morgan, British designer Magnus Long celebrates both traditional craftsmanship and modern design sensibilities and exemplifies his commitment to seemingly opposing ideals – heritage and innovation.

As with all his work, Magnus Long designed the Barricane armchairs and side chairs at a human scale, making them as equally comfortable to live with as they are to sit in.

Named for Barricane Beach in Devon, a secluded cove where sunsets are magnificently framed by rugged cliff sides, the chairs demonstrate a duality between the structured timber frames and elegantly caned backrests. The opposing materials also emphasize the contrasting of the horizontal and vertical lines of the frame with the rounded curves of the backrests.

The intricate weave pattern of the Barricane chairs’ backrests allow light to flow through the chair and illuminate the silhouette, while the structure of the frame draws a horizontal line from arm to back. Adding further softness and comfort, the upholstered seat cushions have a gentle waterfall edge.

For designer Magnus Long, opting for a cane back was functional as well as sustainable since it is a natural and biodegradable alternative to common-day synthetic meshes. For Morgan, caning is a large element of its production, with a caning station overseen by a skilled artisan having been incorporated into its Hampshire factory’s production facility in 2015.

The Barricane collection by Magnus Long for Morgan is offered in a number of FSC-certified timber options (including walnut, ash, oak and beech) in a variety of stains and colours, and a wide selection of upholstery fabrics and leathers.
