When designing the new Grain and Reeds patterns for new acoustic panels for FilzFelt, German furniture designer and interior architect Bernd Benninghoff took direct influence from nature – specifically the varying landscapes of the Canary Islands.
Bringing the outdoors in, the Grain and Reeds patterns are both made from 100 per cent Wool Design Felt, the biodegradable and compostable milled wool fleece that is moisture-resistant, self-extinguishing and boasts high thermal and acoustic insulation properties.
With Grain, Benninghoff celebrates the variegated details found in the leaves and bark of the island’s native flora, while his Reeds evokes the gentle swaying of local sturdy grasses.
A feature of both of the nature-inspired motifs, v-groove incisions into the material manipulate and play with light and shadow, lending each surface a subtle sense of movement. Based on photographs the designer took while hiking the rugged island setting, the subtle and natural curves of the Grain and Reeds patterns have a restrained elegance that would be suitable for use in a wide array of settings, from open-plan offices and hotel rooms to healthcare and educational settings.
Grain and Reeds Wool Design Felt acoustic panels (with a 0.50 NRC) by Bernd Benninghoff for FilzFelt can be backed by the Akustika 10 substrate (which is comprised of 60 per cent post-consumer recycled content and is 100 per cent recyclable). Easy to install using a direct-glue application, the acoustic panels are available in 90 colourways for the Wool Design Felt and three shades of grey for Akustika; each of the colours can be paired with one grey, or two colours can be layered together on the pure wool felt in a manner that reveals the base colour through the undulating v-grooves.
