Nanimarquina's sustainable rug collection Re-Rug, shown in a residential setting

Intent on reducing material waste in the production process, Spanish designer and brand founder Nani Marquina began researching how to use leftover wool from the manufacturing of her studio’s rugs. The result is the new Re-Rug collection, a sustainable carpet series made from a 50-50 mix of virgin and reused wool.

Re-Rug by Nanimarquina comes in beautiful colour gradients

To achieve the collection, the team developed a process to turn wool scraps into a yarn suitable for weaving: first, the accumulated waste wool is separated by colour to create two versions of the Re-Rug, one colourful and one black and white. Next, the yarns are shredded by hand into small pieces that are then “mechanically opened and transformed back into fibre.”

Muted tones are also included in Nanimarquina's sustainable Re-rug collection

From there, the recycled fibres are hand-spun and -stretched before being hand-loomed using the traditional dhurrie technique. To give Nanimarquina’s sustainable Re-Rug collection strength and durability, the flat-structure weaves use New Zealand virgin wool (dyed black and white, yellow and blue, green and red) for the warp and the marbled-effect recycled yarn (in varying thickness and colours) for the weft.

Using one-kilogram of reprocessed wool each, Nanimarquina’s Re-Rug collection directly reduces unmanaged waste and CO2 emissions.
