Striking and statement-making, the Phase light collection is a response by Los Angeles-based Estudio Persona to a brief by New Zealand design house Resident that asked for a “significant memorable element, which could also exist in more regular sizes.”
Marking the first collaboration between Resident and the studio founded by Uruguayan designers Emiliana Gonzalez and Jessie Young, the Phase collection of pendants, table lamps and wall lights was refined over 18 months and two continents, with the final result being one singular yet essential element – a crescent-shaped fixture that harmonizes the contrast between shadow and luminosity.
For inspiration, Estudio Persona looked to the work of German visual artist Rebecca Horn – specifically her White Body Fan (1972), through which the designers perceived a symbiotic relationship between the female body and the moon, a “symbol of femininity, darkness, mystery, renewal and transitions.”
Representing the dramatic contrast between light and dark, the Phase lights are composed with a bronzed-aluminum body that seamlessly encases an acrylic diffuser with a subtle linen texture that casts the LED illumination with an inviting warmth. With the small Phase pendant, a fraction of a crescent is represented, while the large version places the bronzed-aluminum body and LED diffuser side-by-side to form a stunning half-moon. Both small and large versions are suspended from two slimline wires and appear to float in midair, creating captivating and impactful installations. Available in a dark bronze finish.
Estudio Persona has also included a table lamp and wall light (both are available in dark bronze or white finishes) as part of the Phase collection for Resident, with each adding a distinct shape to the surface it occupies. All iterations can be used as standalone objects; and the small pendant, table lamp and wall light can be arranged in multiples to instill moments of coordinated visual significance.
