Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen in 1945, the Radio House mirror has been put into production by Carl Hansen & Søn, in collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architect. Originally a custom-made piece for the Royal Retiring Room at Radio House in Copenhagen, once the headquarters for the Danish public radio broadcaster, now home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and still one the architect’s most-famous and beloved buildings.
A work of art in and of itself, the Royal Retiring Room was attached to the royal box, which overlooked the building’s concert hall. The architect approached architecture and furniture design as all-encompassing, designing every piece of furniture and element – from door handle to bannisters and lamps – in his esteemed Functionalist style.
To that end, the Radio House Mirror (VLA62) exemplifies practicality in a truly stunnig way. The full-length mirror features a hand-crafted frame with gently rounded corners and a deep concaved profile.
Made from eight pieces of carved solid oak, the frame is assembled by hand with unwavering precision to ensure that the wood’s distinctive grain remains continuous and uninterrupted. Once flawlessly executed, the frame is hand-sanded to a smooth and pleasingly tactile finish and then oiled.
Considered a piece of furniture in its own right, the Radio House Mirror from Carl Hansen & Søn makes a beautiful accent in private home as well as in public settings like theatres, hotels, retail shops and more.
